A message from  Detachment Commander for 2017-2018
Mike Saindon

Detachment Commander Michael Saindon

Greetings Team Kansas,

August was another busy month. I had the honor of attending the National Convention in Reno, Nevada. Danny Smith of Nebraska was elected the Sons of The American Legion National Commander. If you ever get the opportunity to attend a National Convention, District Convention or State Convention, please do so. You will never regret it. I would like to congratulate Commander Tom Wallsmith, Historian Caleb Fredrickson and Wes Wills. Their Sons of The American Legion history book took first place at the National Convention. Outstanding job! Every Squadron and District should be looking at submitting their history book or a scrap book at these conventions. It's an opportunity for your Squadron or District to get recognized for the outstanding work you are doing. Now let's talk about membership. We are still short 105 members for 2017 in order to make our 39th alltime high. If every Squadron in the state can just renew one member that did not renew for 2017 yet, we can make it. Help us accomplish our 39th consecutive year. No other Detachment is even close to that many consecutive years. Let's not break this string. As we start our 2018 membership year, we need to lead by example by having every officer in every Squadron pay their dues immediately and then get them transmitted. If we do this, it would eliminate every “goose egg” we have in every Squadron. We all need to remember the reason we joined The Sons of The American Legion. We joined to honor our parents and grandparents for their service and sacrifices while serving our country. Your membership and participation in the S.A.L. plays a vital part in supporting many events like the Eisenhower Pilgrimage, The Big Red One Turkey Run and Operation North Pole. I hope to see a number of you participating as time allows. It’s a great opportunity for your Squadron to get involved. And remember... There is always one more thing we can do to support our Veterans, Children and Youth.

Thank You For All You Do!

One more thing to remember... There is always one more thing we can do to support our Veterans, Children and Youth or Our disaster victims.

Hurricane Harvey: How to support veterans in need

The American Legion’s National Emergency Fund provides direct financial assistance to Legion Family members and posts impacted by natural disasters like Hurricane Harvey.

A full 100 percent of donations to the National Emergency Fund are turned into grants for individuals, families, and posts impacted by natural disasters. Donations are tax-deductible, and are not used to cover administrative or promotional costs.

Please act now to support veterans and their families impacted by Hurricane Harvey and the subsequent flooding in Texas and other gulf cost regions.

Important Notice

To all Detachment of Kansas Squadrons:

The By Laws of the Detachment of Kansas have been changed:

The Squadrons of Kansas are no longer required to return their unused membership cards in order to receive their new membership cards. The new cards will be mailed out when they are received from National Headquarters.   This year they will be starting to mail them out from Topeka on Monday June 13, 2016. It is suggested that each Squadron have some established way of accounting for their membership cards but it is not a requirement.

The SALute is being distributed strictly electronicly, and its very possible that this will be the way it is distributed in the future. If you want your Squadron to receive a copy please send us a working e-mail for your squadron. This SALute was put together by  Don Culver, tell us what you think. We will consider all suggestions. E-mail your Squadrons e-mail address or your coments to us, our e-mails are listed in the August SALute.
